Ten riverside rooms, each with its own outdoor onsen

Man’yō no Sato Hakuunsou万葉の里 白雲荘

Every one of Hakuunsou’s ten rooms has a private source-fed outdoor bath on its terrace, a Michelin-starred kaiseki programme rotates monthly, and the building sits directly over the upper Chitose River - the most contemporary of Yugawara’s ultra-luxury inns.

Ryokan (ultra-luxury)

Hakuunsou is a ten-room inn built around a single organising principle: every guest has exclusive access to a private open-air bath, drawn from the spring via source-fed flow, on their own terrace. The public baths function as a secondary amenity rather than the main bath experience. This is the opposite of the Sansuirou model where the 8F public bath is a destination - here, the destination is in your room.

The dining programme is Michelin-starred kaiseki. The menu rotates monthly and leans on Sagami Bay seafood and local mountain ingredients. The pacing is slower and more formal than at Sansuirou - fewer guests, fewer simultaneous covers, more deliberate courses. Meals are served in a mix of in-room and private-dining formats depending on the plan; confirm at booking.

The building sits directly over the Chitose River in the upper valley. From some rooms you hear the river without any intermediate sound. The architecture is contemporary-traditional: wood, stone, glass, with the river as the central visual anchor. This is not a historical ryokan - it is a contemporary luxury inn in the Japanese ryokan format.

International presence on Agoda and Booking.com is unusual for a Yugawara ryokan at this tier. The official site has an English version. Reservations run 8-12 weeks out for peak weekends (Golden Week, autumn colours, New Year). Cancellation policy is strict; read it on the booking platform before confirming.
