By train
From Tokyo and Shinjuku
From Shinjuku (Odakyu Line): The most comfortable route. Take the Odakyu Romancecar limited express direct to Odawara - about 70 minutes, reserved seating, no standing. A surcharge applies on top of the base fare (total roughly ¥1,800-¥2,000). From Odawara, transfer to the JR Tōkaidō Line local bound for Atami - two stops, about 20 minutes, roughly ¥310. Total door-to-door from Shinjuku: around 90 minutes.
The regular Odakyu express (急行) also runs Shinjuku-Odawara and is cheaper, but takes about 80-90 minutes and involves standing at peak times. For a trip that starts with an onsen, the Romancecar surcharge is usually worth it.
From Tokyo Station (JR): Take the JR Tōkaidō Line rapid or the Shōnan-Shinjuku Line to Odawara - roughly 50-60 minutes depending on service. From Odawara, same transfer as above. If you're coming from Tokyo and in no hurry, this works fine and is fully covered by Suica/IC card.
Shinkansen to Odawara: Kodama stops at Odawara - about 35 minutes from Tokyo Station. This makes sense if you're arriving from Osaka or further west, or if you have a JR Pass. From Odawara, the same local transfer applies.
From Atami: One stop back toward Tokyo on the JR Tōkaidō Line - about 8 minutes. Useful if you're combining Yugawara with a trip to Atami or the Izu Peninsula.
Station to onsen district
From Yugawara Station into the valley
Yugawara Station sits at the mouth of the valley. Most ryokan, onsen, and upper-valley venues are in the Miyakami (宮上) or Miyashita (宮下) districts - a 15-minute bus ride or a ¥1,000-¥1,500 taxi from the station forecourt.
Bus: Izu Hakone buses depart from the stop directly outside the station. The main route runs up the valley toward Okuyugawara (奥湯河原) and stops near most of the major ryokan. Single fare is roughly ¥220 for the lower valley stops. Buses run every 20-30 minutes during the day; less frequent in the evening.
Taxi: The stand is at the station exit. Fares to the ryokan district run roughly ¥1,000-¥1,500 depending on how far up the valley you're going. Many ryokan will arrange pickup if you call ahead - worth asking at booking.
On foot: The lower parts of town are walkable from the station in 10-15 minutes, including the area around Fujiki River and the lower onsen. The upper valley (Miyakami) is a steady uphill walk - doable, but most visitors take the bus or taxi for this leg.
Practical notes
What to know before you go
- IC cards (Suica, Pasmo) work for all JR and Odakyu legs except the Romancecar surcharge, which needs a separate reserved-seat ticket (buy on the Odakyu app or at the station).
- Last trains back to Odawara from Yugawara run until around 23:00 - check the timetable at the station if you're planning an evening meal or late onsen.
- There is no coin locker shortage, but the station is small. Most ryokan allow early luggage drop even before check-in - worth calling ahead rather than carrying bags up the valley on arrival day.
- Driving is feasible but parking in the valley is limited and narrow roads make navigation trickier than the train. For anything longer than a day trip, the train is the better call.
