Ryokan (upscale)

SANSUIROU opened in 1933 (Showa 8) and has been run by the same family ever since. The inn occupies four named buildings arranged around an inner garden, with 57 rooms total across them. Room classes vary widely - from standard tatami rooms in the main buildings to suites with private open-air baths in the Genji annex - so the price range is broad within a single property.

The signature bath is the eighth-floor observation bath, which looks out over the Oku-Yugawara valley toward the Hakone range. The Finnish sauna is a more recent addition and reads as a modern amenity bolted onto a traditional inn, which it is. There are also alternating-gender indoor baths on lower floors. Reservable private baths are available.

Dining is seasonal kaiseki served in private Shusuitei dining rooms - not in-room, which matters for planning: guests walk to a dedicated dining building rather than being served on their own tatami. Yuzu is the house herb; it runs through the menu across savoury and dessert courses. Seasonal rotation is monthly. Breakfast is Japanese-set, also in the dining hall.

Access is a taxi ride from Yugawara Station - roughly 10 minutes up into the valley. The inn runs a free shuttle at specific times; confirm at booking. For foreign visitors: the official site has an English version, and staff at the front desk handle English guests regularly given the international platform presence (Jalan, Ikyu, Relux).
