4,000 plum trees + a 626m summit

Makuyama Park幕山公園

Makuyama Park is the town’s definitive seasonal stop - 4,000 plum trees flower between early February and early March, and the park doubles as the trailhead for a beginner-friendly 5km loop to the 626m summit, which sits over Sagami Bay.

About this place

The plum festival (Plum Banquet festival) runs from the first weekend of February through the first weekend of March each year. The 4,000 ume trees are planted on a sloping hillside that reads as a pink-and-white amphitheatre when the bloom peaks - a view the station-area coffee cluster simply cannot match. Outside festival weeks, the same hillside is quiet; outside plum season, the trees are green and the trailhead is unchanged.

The summit hike is 5 kilometres round-trip, climbing to 626 metres. A beginner-level walk by Japanese standards: no ropes, no scrambling, clear signage. The summit opens onto Sagami Bay with the Hatsushima and Izu peninsulas visible on clear days. A typical pace is 2.5 hours up-and-back with a summit break. Bring water, proper shoes, and a light layer if you’re walking in the cooler months.

Access is a 15-minute bus ride from Yugawara Station to the Makuyama Park stop. During plum-festival weekends the bus fills up early; plan for the first run (before 9 a.m.) or for a mid-afternoon slot after the initial wave has returned.
