Beach • Yugawara (Yoshihama)
About this place
Yoshihama (Yoshihama) is the swimming beach for Yugawara-machi. The sand is volcanic black, characteristic of the eastern Izu coast, and the water tests AA on Kanagawa Prefecture’s summer bathing-water quality ranking - the top tier. The beach itself runs about 500 metres, with a modest parking lot and a small line of seasonal beach houses (Umi no Ie) during the open season.
The swimming season is short: mid-July to the end of August each year, with lifeguards on duty. Outside that window the beach is accessible and pleasant for a walk but not officially open for swimming. Parking is ¥1,000 per day in peak season; the beach itself is free.
Access from Yugawara Station is a 5-minute bus ride to the Umi no Ie stop. The bay is sheltered enough that the waves are gentler than the more exposed Atami and Ito beaches further south, which makes this a reasonable family option. Pair with the Fukuura fishing port if you want a coastal half-day.
