WEST Hon-ten is a proper kissaten in the older Japanese sense: a 94-seat dining room that serves coffee, but also serves full meals, and the meals are the real programme. Pork katsu curry and Hamburg steak are the signatures. The coffee is competent rather than reverent. The space has the scale that kissaten had before rent priced them out of central Tokyo.
Hours are 8:00 to 20:00, closed Thursdays. That 8am opening is unusual and useful - a visitor stepping off an early train can eat breakfast here, read the paper, and be ready for the onsen or the hiking trail by the time the rest of the town opens. Five parking spaces sit on site, which in Yugawara is a meaningful amount.
