01 · Station

Yugawara Station

The station area is useful for supplies, meeting people, leaving luggage, and changing to transport for the coast or onsen district.
Best for
First and last stops; short visits; keeping the return train simple.
Movement
Do not treat arrival at Yugawara Station as arrival at every ryokan or onsen facility.

02 · Central town and river

Central town and river

Streets, shops, food, and the river connect the station side with the valley without becoming a single tourist precinct.
Best for
Town walks, local businesses, flexible meals, and seeing ordinary life.
Movement
Some stretches are walkable; judge the full distance and weather rather than assuming the whole corridor is short.

03 · Onsen district

The onsen district

The onsen district follows the Chitose River inland. It has Manyo Park, bathing facilities, ryokan, cafés, and steep side streets.
Best for
Bathing, park time, an overnight stay, and a compact afternoon.
Movement
Check bus, taxi, and lodging access, especially around check-in, dinner, and the last service.

04 · Oku-Yugawara

Oku-Yugawara

Oku-Yugawara is beyond the main onsen district. It is quieter and greener, but farther from the station and less convenient for repeated trips into town.
Best for
Staying put, a quiet ryokan, forest atmosphere, and fewer transitions.
Movement
Plan transport before arrival; spontaneous back-and-forth trips are less useful here.

05 · Yoshihama and coast

Yoshihama coast

Yoshihama has a beach and open sea east of the station, in the opposite direction from the inland onsen valley. Check the weather and transport before going.
Best for
Sea time, seasonal beach use, coastal light, and an open-air change of pace.
Movement
Treat coast and upper valley as separate directions unless transport and time are deliberately planned.

Places can share a Yugawara address while still requiring separate bus journeys or long uphill walks.

    Check the onward bus, taxi, walk, or lodging transfer before assuming the trip ends at the platform.

    The river and road form an inland axis.

    Check the distance and slope between central town, the onsen district, and Oku-Yugawara.

    The coast is another direction.

    Yoshihama is not a casual extension of every inland plan; give it its own weather and travel decision.

    Put fixed times on the map first.

    Mark dinner, check-in, reservations, and the last train before adding stops without fixed times.
