Yugawara has been a hot-spring town for over a thousand years. Soak for an hour at a day bath, spend an afternoon at a spa, or stay the night with a tub of your own.
Three ways to bathe
Day baths are the easy way in: turn up, pay at the desk, and bathe. Kogome no Yu and Miyakami no Yu are the classics in the onsen district. Yutoro, on the hill above Yoshihama, is the big one, with a waterfall bath, a cave bath and a sauna. Soyu Terrace, in Man'yō Park, is a longer, quieter half day with lunch.
Some ryokan open their baths to day visitors too. Hotel Shiroyama, two minutes from the station, is open till 22:30, and Kōyōkan lets you into its own-spring bath in the afternoon. For the full ryokan experience without a night, Sen and Hakuunsou sell day plans with a room, a meal and the baths. And for a night somewhere old, Uenoya is a wooden inn from 1930 with two springs of its own and private open-air baths free for guests.

Wash first
Sit at a washing station and rinse off completely before you get in.
Towel stays out
Keep your small towel out of the water. Fold it on your head or leave it by the edge.
Tattoos
Many shared baths don't allow tattoos. Private baths are the easy answer, and each bath page says what applies.

Miyakami no Yu opens at 7:00. Hotel Shiroyama, by the station, takes day visitors till 22:30, and Yutoro is open till 22:00 at weekends.
