Yugawara, Kanagawa
Ryokan · onsen district
One of Yugawara's oldest inns, in a four-storey wooden building from 1930 that's a registered cultural property. Two springs of its own, free private open-air baths, and a hinoki foot bath on the top floor.

Uenoya has taken guests since the Edo period, and it's the place to stay if you want old Yugawara. The main building is a four-storey wooden inn from 1930, with an annex from 1923 and an entrance hall from around 1936, all registered as a national Tangible Cultural Property. The rooms are tatami, with high ceilings and wood polished by a century of use.
Three rooms have their own hot-spring bath in hinoki or Izu stone. Five rooms share toilets just down the corridor, so pick your room with that in mind. Dinner and breakfast are in the dining room, and some plans serve them in your room.
It's in the middle of the onsen district. Take the Fudō Falls or Oku-Yugawara bus from stop 2 at the station to Onsenba-chūō (about 12 minutes) and walk 50 metres, or take a taxi (about 10 minutes).

Uenoya has two springs on its own grounds, and the water goes into the baths straight from the source with no chlorine. The indoor baths, Mubyō no Yu, are a granite bath with a gourd-shaped spout and a hinoki bath; men and women swap between them morning and evening.
The two private open-air baths, Fujiki and Chitose, are free for guests. On busy days you book a time at the front desk when you arrive. On the top floor, a hinoki foot bath in an old guest room looks out over the hills.
Uenoya also sells day plans without a night on its booking page.
