About the event

Buran-ichi fills the shopping street by the station with stalls: knitwear and cloth goods, woodwork, pottery and glass, plus food, local produce and music. It's a good hour's browse on the way to or from the train.

The November market moves to the taxi roundabout in front of the station. It's cancelled in strong wind; the market's website posts a decision by about 18:00 the day before.

Make a day of it

The market is right by the station and wraps up in the early afternoon, so there's time for a bath after. November is autumn-leaves season up the valley, and the February market falls during the plum festival at Makuyama.

Lunch and dinner by the station

Kappo Shirako cooks fish straight from the ports (closed Mondays), Arai Shoten serves Peruvian lunches and dinners (closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays), and Saluté is easy Italian with children (closed Mondays). In the evening, Kinsanchi fries kushiage to order and Bar The King mixes fresh-fruit cocktails by the river (both closed Sundays).

The afternoon

Hotel Shiroyama, two minutes from the station, opens its baths to day visitors until 22:30. Miyakami no Yu is a riverside day bath with no regular closing day, open from 7:00, a short bus ride up the valley, and Kogome no Yu by Man'yō Park is the town's own (closed Mondays).

Where to stay

For a group, Shiroyamakan (formerly Shiroyama Bekkan) rents out the whole annex of an onsen inn two minutes from the station, with a spring-fed bath and room for 12. Treeside is four minutes from the station, with rooms and apartments. On a budget, Yugawara Share House has private rooms 13 minutes up the hill. Matt's friend Masato runs it. Up in the onsen district, Hotel Shikisai runs a microbus from the station and is easy with children, and Genzan Uenoya is old Yugawara in a 1930 wooden inn. Friends of Matt's run Shiroyamakan.
