Coming up

Shunran and other oriental orchids were once the hobby of the wealthy: quiet, grassy plants prized for the shape of a leaf or the colour of a single flower. Local growers show their best pots, sell young plants, and will tell you how to keep one alive on a windowsill.
It's a minute from the station, in Room 302 of the Chamber of Commerce building on your left as you come down the front steps.
The show is a minute from the station, so it fits easily around lunch and a bath. Mid-November is also when the maples start to turn up the valley.
Kappo Shirako cooks fish straight from the ports (closed Mondays), Arai Shoten serves Peruvian lunches and dinners (closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays), and Saluté is easy Italian with children (closed Mondays). In the evening, Kinsanchi fries kushiage to order and Bar The King mixes fresh-fruit cocktails by the river (both closed Sundays).

A Peruvian kitchen that moved here from Shimbashi after 18 years. Casual lunches, and dinner courses planned with you by phone.

A relaxed Italian place four minutes from the station, with pizza, pasta, house cakes and imported wine, and a lift from the car park.

An izakaya two minutes from the station, frying kushiage to order and serving it with a sweet sauce that takes three days to make.

A tiny English bar by the Chitose River, full of antiques, pouring fresh-fruit cocktails, Guinness and Irish coffee.
Man'yō Park and Fudō Falls are a bus ride up the valley. Ikemine Momiji-no-sato, a hillside of about 540 maples above Oku-Yugawara, turns later than most, so it's often at its best in late November.

A wooded park along the Chitose River in the heart of the onsen district, with stream-side decks, a thatched tea house, a café and a day spa.

A 15-metre waterfall in the woods at the top of the valley, a short walk from the bus, with shrines on either side and a tea house with a foot bath.

A hillside of about 540 Japanese maples above Oku-Yugawara that turns red later than most, from mid-November into early December.
Hotel Shiroyama, two minutes from the station, opens its baths to day visitors until 22:30. Miyakami no Yu is a riverside day bath with no regular closing day, open from 7:00, a short bus ride up the valley, and Kogome no Yu by Man'yō Park is the town's own (closed Mondays).

A ryokan two minutes from the station that opens its baths to day visitors until 22:30, including the only radon bath in the Izu and Hakone area.

A riverside day bath with free-flowing spring water, a carbonated bath and private baths, open from 7am.

The town's own day bath, next to Man'yō Park: big indoor and open-air baths, a free tatami rest room, and cheap entry after 7pm.
For a group, Shiroyamakan (formerly Shiroyama Bekkan) rents out the whole annex of an onsen inn two minutes from the station, with a spring-fed bath and room for 12. Treeside is four minutes from the station, with rooms and apartments. On a budget, Yugawara Share House has private rooms 13 minutes up the hill. Matt's friend Masato runs it. Up in the onsen district, Hotel Shikisai runs a microbus from the station and is easy with children, and Genzan Uenoya is old Yugawara in a 1930 wooden inn. Friends of Matt's run Shiroyamakan.

The detached annex of an onsen inn two minutes from Yugawara Station, rented whole: three bedrooms, room for up to 12, and a half-open-air bath fed from the hot spring.

A small design hotel and apartments four minutes from the station, with rooms that look out to the hills and a restaurant downstairs.

A share house on the hill above Yugawara Station, run by Matt's friend Masato: private Japanese-style rooms by the night, a big shared kitchen, and a roof terrace over the town and Sagami Bay.

A big, easygoing onsen hotel by the river with buffet dinners, a station shuttle, table tennis and a summer pool. Good value for families and groups.

One of Yugawara's oldest inns, in a four-storey wooden building from 1930 that's a registered cultural property. Two springs of its own, free private open-air baths, and a hinoki foot bath on the top floor.
